I enjoy watching a few of the TV improvement & building shows when I’ve got the time. Sunday nights I can usually watch “Before & After”. The past few shows have been a real joke though. Pushed as a remodeling show for upper middle class viewers, they’re doing about as much remodeling as the families in Honduras after the hurricane! How many of you call ripping down everything but the footings remodeling? Being a design professional I’ve been faced with similar situations, but I call them demolition and new construction, not before and after. I think Pat Simpson and the producers need to take a closer look at the “remodeling” they’re presenting and come up with a new name for the show. Why don’t we give them some suggestions! I’ll start with…. Beautiful site, Demo the shack and put up a shoreline masterpiece! I’ll have to come up with something shorter.

Hi Chad,
Not familiar with the show, but one long shot could be that the properties that they pick are grandfathered in and as long as they use parts of the existing they can built there.
Just a thought.

*That is a big loophole here! I've seen three houses demo'd nearly to a lone cornerpost and rebuilt in the neighborhood. A way to deal with those pesky setbacks.

I agree with you Gabe. We do alot of that up here along river and lake shoreline to get around the new more restrictive setbacks. Some of the lots I've worked on would be unbuildable if the practice wasn't followed.

I'm with Gabe, in my neck of the woods, I've heard tale of tearing everything down but the first floor front wall. They do this to avoid all the laws that have been put in place since it was new construction. This is not to screw the county or horribly violate laws, it is more a function of over reaching law.
*So why do we allow these laws to be on the books still if none of us agrees with them?Near the stream and wishing NY had NHers license plate slogan!J (the lobster trainer)
