I need to replace my central air condensing unit. My HVAC repairman says that my compressor has burned out and I need to replace the condensing unit and lineset due to excessive acid levels in the system. Others have told me that the system can be flushed out and the compressor replaced (condensor coils are ok). What to do? If I do replace the condensing unit, what is the best brand to go with? I hear that TRANE is a good choice, also LENNOX, HEIL AND AMANA. Also

Have you obtained a second opinion? With the conflicting advice you're getting it may be the prudent thing to do.
Most good HVAC men know what "brand" of equipment works best for their environment. If it's a coin toss between two reputable brands as to what you'll install, I'd take the opinion of the installer as to what manufacturer to use.
*In my recent quest for a clean deal in A/C, I heard repeatedly that there are just a few manufacturers of components such as the compressor; the different brands just package and market them differently. Making things more confusing is that several companies market more than one brand. We purchased a SEER 11 York largely on price (though our old Carrier did apparently last 30 years!). Look for a decent warranty that includes labor (ours is 5 years). And Mongo is right (golly), get more opinions. I hated it but ended up getting bids from 6 companies b/c I got such conflicting signals, quotes from $1800 to $3k (not to mention the vermin who said we should replace our "outdated" 8 y.o. 78% efficiency furnace!). I didn't want to get so many -- though some only took 15 minutes -- yet I'm glad I did. The company we chose was not cheapest ($2.4k) but did an efficient job that I feel confident in, no BS salesmanship. (An interesting factor to look for -- is the guy they send out for a quote a SALESPERSON or a TECHNICIAN? The latter tend to be more down-to-earth.)If your unit is old it may be advantageous to update more than the compressor; also, matched components may perform better together. Underscore "may." I'm in Virginia, where the high cost of super-efficiency would never be earned back.
