The sheet zinc strips, about 5" wide, work well in the south. I have seen the before and after effects. One HOs roof was thick with moss and stains. They didn't even scrub the stuff off. The carpenters just put, I think it was blind nailed just below the ridge. In just a few weeks of rain the roof was clean except for the small area above the strips.
I would have probably scrubbed the roof clean before installation but it worked well in this case. From what I understand it wasn't very expensive.

Go to your roofing supplier and get zinc strips. they have ones that even look fancy that attach near the peak. When it rains it washes the zinc down the roof and removes the green critters.
