Just finishing up pulling out a trex deck which the homeowner doesn’t like the look of. He apparently had a wood deck previously and we will replace the trex with redwood. Go figure. Now comes the question of a finish for the redwood. We used a variety of pentrating wood finishes when we regularly installed wood decks a number of years ago. I imagine better finishes have come on the market in the past ten years. The deck is on the central coast of Ca. so snow isn’t a factor, but it will get splashed by sprinklers and go through the normal wet/dry seasons.
Would appreciate knowing about any finish you use and like that has a good track record of at least five years.

as Buddha said to the hotdog vendor .... "make me one with everything"
The two I have seen mentioned most here are messmers and penofin. I have not used it on redwood, only Ipe, but it work great. It is a penetrating oil finish that will protect the wood very well. You can check out the websites. I've used penofin but messmers is pretty much the same.

If you use stain with some UV protection, plan to re-do every 2 or 3 years.
If you use a clear to try and keep the "Redwood" look, plan to redo every year.
I would use a product like Thompsons water seal and sit back and let it grey.
You get out of life what you put into it......minus taxes.

penofin, used it on a couple of decks in the north bay,Marin area and works great,4 years and HO retreated as directed, looked at it while visiting some family in the area last month. still nice
Note> keep the sprinklers off/away from the deck! the bleaching effect and minerals and whatever else is in the water has ruined many a redwood deck and fence in the Northern CA area so I imagine it would do the same in the Central Coast too.I cut the board twice and its still too short ! ! !
I didn't use a thompsons cause the ones I have seen lift and peel a lot, although could be a poor application as the cause.
