Best Location With Respect to Shingle for Roof Vent Pipe
Where is the best location (with respect to the shingle) to cut a hole for a new 4″ roof vent pipe?
I am installing a Radon system that will terminate in a 4″ roof vent pipe in the garage. I can place the roof penetration pretty much anywhere (Left-Right, Up-Down) I want. Is there a “sweet spot” location with respect to the Architectural Shingle — i.e. a spot that make the work the easiest or makes the roof the tightest?
Do I want the “hill” on the flashing to sit just at the bottom of the shingle? Do I want to cut a semi-circle in the shingle to go around the “hill”? Does it even matter?
Do I want it between two shingles? In the middle of a shingle? Basically, if a roofer said, “I wish they had put the pipe right THERE!” where would that be?
Roof is typical architectural shingle, 12/12 or 10/12 I think. I plan to terminate with a black ABS pipe through the appropriate Oatey flashing I can get at the Blue, Orange or Green big box store.
Thanks,
Tim

IMHO you're over thinking it., Just cut a hole and put it in. It will work out fine.
Anywhere is fine as for shingles.
If you are in snow country get it close to teh ridge or it can get sheared off. More of a problem with metal roofs, but I have seen problems with asphalt shingles.
As long as it's flashed correctly it will make no difference at all.
