Ed W - You want a really stiff wall behind the brick to prevent cracks. My preference would be for 5/8" or 3/4" exterior grade plywood, depending on the height of the brick.
By the way, depending on the height of the brick, 2 x 4's might not cut it for lateral forces on the brick wall (wind loading)to prevent cracks. We have a brick addition going up right now with a cornice height of about 14 feet and the structural engineer required 2 x 6 Timberstrand 16" o.c. and 3/4" sheathing for L/600 criteria.
Don't forget 3/4"-1" airspace, felt, ties, weepholes, mortar net - etc. lots of good masonry accessories around today.
