Hey Guys,
I need the best way to make a strong newel post attachment. This is for the inside staircase. Just put in subfloor, and took the T&G wood down which made up the walls of the closet under the stairs. This was done for easier install of subfloor. The stringers for the stairs are 3/4″, 120 years old. The stringer was “notched” to allow an electrical outlet installation, weakening it. I sistered up 2×12 doug fir to add strength, and plan on framing out a new closet.
The newel post, I want very strong, nothing wobbly. I’ve thought of running it through the subfloor to framing underneath and securing it that way. Sort of like a deck or porch. If you guys have an easier way I’d appreciate it. I’ll take some pics Tuesday, maybe that will make it more clear.
Thanks
Kevin
PS Happy Fathers Day!

Yes, through the subfloor and lag bolted to the joist with blocking alongside as well. And use Pl Premium to avoid squeaks.

I've strengthened a couple old newels by grabbing their bottoms from below with three angled 5/16" lag screws.
But first, frame up blocking under the rough floor planking. A 3-pce pre-assembly PL'ed & screwed to the joists are a good way to go.
ditto through the floor. You should be able to buy a newels with the provisons (large dia dowel) already built on.
