I have used several types of stud finders to try to locate studs in drywall, plaster, plaster and lathe, plaster board etc, and have never been happy with the inconsistant results of any, including some zircon and strait-line. Is anyone really satisfied with their stud finder in various situations (Including maybe the ability to find studs behind tiled bathroom walls?).
Or do I have to keep on tapping the wall like my grandpa, and drill some exploratory holes to be caulked over.
Thanks

Bosch detect 100 wall scanner. Unavailable in US.
Where can I get the Bosch? How much? How did you get it , in US?
Thanks
I don't have one. YET! They are available on some UK tool sites.

Junkman,Do you know if the UK sites will sell to the USA? Will Homeland Security actually allow a US citizen to posess a functional stud finder? Why the heck does Bosch not sell them here???Bill
Bill, I have an old craftsman that works great. Don't know the model number and I am traveling and won't be back for six weeks. I didn't know how good it was until I misplaced it and grabbed a substitute and wound up with about six misreads before I took the time to locate it again. It has the deepscan that actually seems to work, plus it finds studs not echoes. I only remember that it is listed as their "best" series and I bought it in the mid n 90s. I am doing repairs at my daughter's home in Europe so it will be awhile before I can look for a model number.

Any chance of picking up a gross of the Bosch unit while you're there? You could probably unload them all right here and make a nice profit. Just kidding, but if you do decide to pick up a few, I'm first on the list : )
I never met a tool I didn't like!
I just googled the Boach and found they ae also available in Mexico. Try calling:
Robert Bosch, S.A de C.V.Comercial DivisionSierra Gamón 12011000 México, D.F.By telephone: +52 55 5284 3000
I found the price, however, on the UK site below... about 400 pounds without tax. This converts to well over $700. Not. Maybe its for speciallized industrial applications?

You could buy a used x-ray machine for that price. Course, you'd need a license to use it, and to own the source...
I think I'll stick to using my knuckles, lolI never met a tool I didn't like!
You can use my wife....she had no trouble finding one (stud).
Seriously though, been doin` this for too long. I`ve yet to find one of those "toys" worth a plug nickel. Tap on the wall....use common (framing) sense.....test nails in inconspicuous areas...nail "dimples" in mouldings.
Any or all of the above will far outshine one of them battery operated gizmos.
Screw Pete!
Gabe for Governor!
One thing I've found that works is a rare earth magnet. It will find the heads of the drywall screws.
yeah I've had trouble with them too. I borrowed a friends one day, it was a craftsman that came with a drill and it actually worked great (surprise) other than that i'm usally tap'in and spacklin'.
