Best way to insulate a cast iron tub?
I’d like to insulate the basin of my cast iron tub before reinstalling it. I was hoping to spray foam it, so I bought a can of Great Stuff and tried that. Unfortunately, that didn’t go well at all. Great Stuff “streams” the foam and attempting to spread it proved futile.
Any suggestions?
Thanks.

my tub on the second floor got insulated by accident.insulator guy kept shooting cellulose in the walls, couldn't figure where it was going. it fill all around the tub. i don't no if it would hold hot water longer but it is not as chilling to step into in the winter.,if i ever have to tear it out, what a mess. larry
hand me the chainsaw, i need to trim the casing just a hair.
I think hasbeen is onto something. Insulation may help, but only after you've paid to heat up all that cast iron. Any chance you could switch to FG?
Scott.

Swap cast iron for fiberglass?? Surely you jest. :)
It's a bear to wrassle with for sure. But nothing soaks a body quite like an old cast iron skin-wrinkler. We're both relics, you know.
Guess I'll toss the idea of insulating it. Seemed like a good idea at the time.

>>> an old cast iron skin-wrinkler. Hahahaha.... I know what you mean. I have fond memories of growing up with ye olde 'skin wrinkler'. You're right.Scott.Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.”
"Great Stuff" would still probably do the job. Pick up some long plastic tubing the same size as the tube that comes with the can. I've seen this sort of thing in electronics shop, but I don't know what they sell it for there. Anyway, if you get a tube long enough, and you have any sort of access, you can get the foam into the area.
How about bubble wrap? Buy a roll and wrap the tub with the stuff a couple inches thick.
Another thing that may. help is to insulate with foamboard the tub enclosure from the inside.
