I’m bored with bird feeder designs, I want to build something that is going to attract a more high-fa-looting bird, not those black bird bandits, and sparrow trash. has to be easy to fill, got a 4by4 post in ground to mount it on.

I have a feeder that is just a platform with a "gable" roof and a column at each corner. Probably 14" long, 8" wide, and maybe eight inches from the platform to the "eave". We got
i lots
of grackels. So I ran a dowel across each side halfway up. Grackels became rare very quickly. Black oil sunflower seed is the best stuff to serve around here. Blue jay, cardinal, tit mouse. Safflower brings cardinals too. The special feeders for goldfinches work great with thistle seed.

*Sounds nice, Rich... My squirrels will be arriving tomorrow.Ornithologically, Steve
*Steve,It will be a wasted trip. I am not very good at keeping the feeders filled, and right now they're empty (unless your squirrels want the sugar water in the hummingbird feeder). I've lived in this house about nine years now and I've seen a squirrel in the yard exactly one time, and that was probably seven years ago. Even during the months when we were putting out a couple pounds of seed a day, no squirrels. It's weird.Rich Beckman
*Golly, Rich, I didn't know there was such a thing as a squirrel-free zone! The only hope we have here is that the deer will trample the squirrels to death.Bambily, Steve
*we've a couple of orioles and a number of house finches, know what they look like? they've a reddish head, kind of look like a sparrow.
*Squirrel pie - a historically famous dish in Hoosierland :)!
*No shortage of house finches here. Supposedly there are orioles, but I've never seen one. A few years ago we had a juvenile hawk visiting daily for a couple of weeks trying to catch one of the birds in the yard. I watched several attempts, never saw him succeed. Quite comical. And of course, with the pond, we get frequent visits from a great blue heron.Today, the first ever sighting of an indigo bunting! With the feeder empty. Now he probably won't come back!Rich Beckman
*Indiglo Buntings? Invented by timex, no doubt. Cool looking birds though. Have had a couple of them here. Lots of Orioles, occasional rose breasted grosbeak.Today, I'm expecting a flock of fat-bellied beersuckers, rose-cheeked temptresses, tufted titmice, and bald-pates for the party. If it were warmer, it would be like woodstock revisited.
