Do any of you wonderworkers have any really neat birdhouse plans or pictures of birdhouses you have created or wish you had built over the years? I have an assignment from the boss to come up with something for the backyard “and it better be good”. Any help or experience would be appreciated.

Gotta know who you want for neighbors first. Try this site:

Old Stetson - glue it to a board - drill a hole in it.
Old work boot - pull the tongue out, give it a roof, nail it to a tree.
Ya know that old thermos that you broke the glass liner out of - shake the glass in the trash, throw away the cork, and nail the body to a tree. Use the cup attached with glue for a landing zone.

Or put up an aluminum awning. Bird apartments galore.
Martin houses can be attractive.

One of the problems around here in building birdhouses is starlings, which can take over a birdhouse and kill the young (reportedly, they are not very nice guys...). The size of the opening in the bird house is critical to allowing smaller birds in but keeping the starlings out. I think the preferred size is up to 1 1/4". This is also mentioned at:http://www.northwestnatureshop.com/naturearticlesBirdHouses.html
Same issue with BlueJay's around here.
DW got a bird bottle in Colonial Williamsburg, looks great

The website I posted has all sorts of stuff to keep starlings out of the martin houses. And lots of stuff about how to attract martins, etc. It's a good website.
Change Is Good.
You Go First
make a mini model of a small house, then put a little steeple on top that you can put bird seed in

birds need food, why not give it to them right there, and I was also implying to cut a hole in the house.

Planeman;
See if you can lay hands on some old issues of "Birds and Blooms" magazine. It's published by Reiman and they have dozens of birdhouses in every issue - but not plans.
One of the more popular tricks is to make a birdhouse modeled after the main house - same details, just much smaller. Or do one modeled after the bosses office, church, school, the house he grew up in, his boat ....on and on.
Good luck.
