Hello; Not being very shop oriented, I don't understand what it is the new PC joiner will do that my DW won't do. What is this face frame biscuiting?
*Mini biscuits to join kitchen cabinet face frames (around 1 1/2 wide). Sort of a goofy idea, though, in my opinion, cause there is hardly any meat with those small biscuits to hold the frames together, plus you still have to clamp the things. Pocket screwing is faster and stronger and you don't need clamps. I have a Dewalt, and I was pretty pissed off that P-C came up with this, but after looking at it, I can't see myself ever using it. Plus, the P-C is a lot bigger than the Dewalt, and the one I looked at had a lot of slop in the fence
*I'm not positive about this but the porter cable's fence will register on the outside face of a 45 degree mitre where the dewalt will register only on the inside face. The only reason this matters is because usually the outside face of the mitre shows-- and any difference in thickness between materials joined would show up on the outside if the dewalt with the inside registration fence is used. hope this explains it.mike
*Yeah, the fence is the only difference I think I noticed besides the face-frame biscuiting. Basically the DeWalt fence can go 90°, but the PC can tilt down farther to 135° or something. This would be useful for me not so much for miters as when I'm adding a biscuit to something already installed or the body of the machine interferes with coming in the other way. Not very important, a shim under the fence leaf gives the same effect, or you can use the little 45° notches at the fence hinge. The PC is significantly more expensive, no? I have the DW and like it a lot. While on biscuits, does anyone know where I can nonwood biscuits for use outside? I'd like to add a thin rim strip to cover decking board ends without showing too many fasteners; the biscuits would be mostly to protect alignment, with glue (polyurethane? The boards are Trex) and some finish nails to keep it on. I've heard of plastic ones... somewhere?
*We use the plastic ones for soild counter tops. Order them from who ever who buy your tops from
*Will do. Speaking of plastic (that guy in The Graduate was right), anyone know a good solvent for HDPE (high density polyethylene -- plastic shopping bags, shrink wrap, Trex)? Trying to make the perfect Trex hole filler, PVC cement does so-so with sander dust.
