Just bought 1985 home complete with acoustic popcorn ceilings, cramped outdated kitchen (tawny oak cabinets) down to cultured marble jacuzzi tub and b-room sinks. It backs to a golf course with great view but problem is kitchen is in front of house with a 3×5 opening. 1st task is to demo the wall facing golf course and open view. found out it is more load bearing then anticipated so more $$ to have reconstructed. So what I would have spent to redo cabinets and counters etc will now channel to reconstruct. With that said we have to recycle and live with the oak cabinets. My question is can myself and my girlfriend redo the cabinets by reglazing or staining? We will do a little relocating which we can handle, but the facings I would like to improve. They are typical with a lacquer or poly finish.

Sure, degrease em first with ammonia or TSP or any other good detergent and have at it.

Thanks. I am assuming I will live with this as temp fix. But every article and home I tour, if they had 1980 cabinets, no one saved them, but opted for new. Agree?
It's all a matter of budget and taste. If you can't afford new cabinets you need to make what you have work for you. Keep them as they are,or step up to new finish, or step up to new doors in a style you like, or step up to new cabs.First three based on boxes that are not falling apart.TFB (Bill)
I am of the if it ain't broke , don't fix it mindset. If the cabs are in decent shape, it don't matter when they were made. Make em look the color ya want or replace em if ya have the inclination.
I've done a lot of magic on good cabs, by antiqueing them, so it's all about what the final look you are after. Paint them red, then black, then green..beat em up, sand through spots, dark tinted poly over top and you have an antique, while you wait. Looks a 100 yrs old on a brand new box.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
