I was just thinking this morning –
We used to get that question here every 2 weeks or so. But I don’t think I’ve seen it for over a year. (?)
So what gives? Has BT reached so many people that now everyone knows what they’re for?

Boss,
Your question is an excellent one. Hopefully rez will be along shortly to bump this thread up.
The black diamonds came about for two reasons. Many years ago Lima Tools (parent company of Sinclair Tooling) was purchased by Marchison, which was a subsudiary of DeBeers. You probably know DeBeers as the diamond conglomerate.
About this time engineered lumber was making inroads, and along with that the 19.2" on-center spacing.
Lima had originated the 19.2" indication on the tape measure, and for their own marketing purposes the mark not a diamond, but it was in the shape of a lima bean.
Those tapes were manufactured for about 2 years. I have one of the originals, and yes, the lima bean marking was green in color.
There was a lot of hot air and confusion over the lima bean, DeBeers marketing first changed the lima bean to the outline of a soliatire sut diamond. A yer later they changed to the simple solid black diamond seen on many of today's tape measures.
I forget the name of the woman, but there was some backlash because some feminist lobbying group thought the diamond was an effort to subconsciously lure more women into the field of construction. I remember seeing on TV some female congresswoman waving a black diamond tape around in front of the cameras while standing on the steps of the capital building down in DC.
That's pretty good. Even better 'n the cubit story...
Why didn't Noah swat those two mosquitoes?
Cubit Story?
Let's hear the cubit story, please....
I don't know that the cubit thing was ever a "story", so maybe I used the wrong term.Btu many times when people her on BT ask about the black diamonds they've been told that they're equal to one cubit.

What I'm really confused about is the little hook on the end of the tape. Is that there so I can clip the tape to my pants? <g>
Actually, my tape is old enough that it has no markings like that. Thanks for the opportunity to gain a little knowledge! And of course an excuse to get a new tool :)
"Actually, my tape is old enough that it has no markings like that."Heck, my tape is so old it has no markings period - at least for the first couple of inches.... Gotta get a new one, me thinks

"Bored out of your mind this AM?"
Nope.
These things just wander into my mind. Kinda like a bad joke that you just can't resist telling.
Seems like some discussions get repeated over and over and over - Like guys wanting to start out on their own. It just struck me as odd that this issue hasn't coem up for so long.

I was thinking about building a spec. house, but not sure whether to use house wrap or 15lb felt.
As long as you use trusses, it'll be fine with felt or wrap.

I thought Gene Davis started a thread on the 19.2 very recently. I briefly looked but did not see it.

Who else saw the title of the thread and thought, "Oh Lordy, not again"?
Good one.
Can I borrow your glasses? What black dimond?
The Black diamonds are for centers that work in between 16" and 24". They still work with 4 ft. and 8 ft. modules. I've never known anyone who actually used them but that is what they are.
I've done a lot of 19.2 layouts, but never got it to work with 4' modules yet. It is the eight foot convergence that it hits.

Like I said, I never used it or knew anyone to use it , and you are right, it works for 8 not 4. You da man! All of a sudden, I am craving a tuna sandwich.
First - This whole thread was intended to be light hearted, not derious. I've been working with 19.2" centers for 20 years. Second - 19.2" doesn't work out with 4' modules - Only 8'.

or someone who was concieved with a fart???Welcome to Breaktime

"or someone who was concieved with a fart???"That reminds me of a story a guy told me once...But I'll tell this one instead - You remember Lincolnville beach. That is where the ferry departs for my island just off Rt 1. There is a tale about the old 'fart' who used to be the ticket agent, selling them out of a little brick shack the size of a bread truck. Old Mac was plain spoken and that means he never held back on what he was thinking.
There are times when the only customers approaching his ticket window were the locals, and there are times when the visitors and summer headaches outnumbered the native stock. One day a woman from away came strutting up to inquire about the island and learn what she could before here first visit here. now she was for Mac's old eyes, a gift from God Himself. Mac would not have cared if she walked, strutted, ran, sasheyed or crawled, so well equiped was her train from locomotive to caboose. She leaned in on the sill and asked him this and that, and finally got to one of her main concerns. This was the last boat and given her rapid transit from the city, she had neglected to shop and bring basic foodstuffs with her. She neede to know whether there were facilities for eating out and grocery stores here. People do have all sorts of expectations and fantasies about island life. Mac was born and raised here, so he was well equiped to answer her every inquiy with witty quips and information. So when she asked whether she could get bread over on the island, Mac never lost a second in his train of thought as he answered the lady, "Ma'am, you could get bred anywhere you please.!"

Here in Louisiana they past some laws that were going to force us to start laying out the rafters and joist on 19.2" starting Jan. 07(Because of Katrina). I thought that I was finally going to get a chance to use that dang
Tape measure related. I had a customer that does some really good trim work. I was making some wainscoting for him and we started talking tapes. He said he goes nuts trying to find a tape that has no play in the clip at the end.
I explained to him why it moved, he said "oh yeah, that makes sense".
Real men don't use tapes with black diamonds on them.
Real men don't use tapes AT ALL!
Just handspans and arm spans and paces.
