I asked a while back about window treatments. Wanted to stop fading of interior items and cool off affected rooms of the house. I have double pane windows with no bells and whistles. I went and installed Gila window tint according to Manufacturer installation practices. To be honest I would rather take a butt woopin than do it again! Well I woke up today and DW told me that one of the windows is broken. A single crack. The window is facing west.
I called the Gila rep and they are sending me a package in the mail and will be here tomorrow. I need to send pics of the affected window. Need a couple of quotes to replace the window. After going back and forth with her, she said that they do pay out in 99% of the cases involved in breakage. I will probably be the 1%. She said they are looking for a 1/16 inch reveal around the window tint, which I did put. She explained that usually what happens is that there was already some type of flaw in the window pain and the stress of the tint was too much for the window and broke. I wonder how many more flaws I may have……..

Ive installed quite a bit of it . It really reminds me of wall papering with out the wheat paste.
Theres good stuff and theres cheap stuff. The good stuff is a joy for me to use. The cheaper can look like a monkey trying to do a foot ball.
On single pane you can do dark but anything with argon gas has to be light tint . How dark is it ? Can you see inside the house at night ?

Yeah you can see indoors at night. The type of tint was their Platinum style or color. The type tint fit our needs for max heat and fade ability. Can't really tell the tint is their from the outside. A slight reflectivity. But on the inside looking out there is a different hue than regular glass. I really like the product so in appearence. My problem now is to leave the rest of the windows alone or strip them. Three windows I did tint which are still intact are large and tempered glass. Expensive. We'll see what happens. I am going to wait for the package and see what their recommendations will be in regard to the rest of the windows.

Mooney,
I think that you might be meaning LowE, not argon. Argon is clear and colorless gas that won't have any effect in this case, but using a dark window film with a LowE coated window is an invitation to a broken window. Actually, using pretty much any tinted film with a LowE window is not always a good idea.
There is a very good reason why good quality tinted IG windows are always installed with the tinted lite to the exterior. It is never a good idea to have a dark tint to the inside of a dual pane window.
Sorry for your problem.
But I just got to.....
Heheheheh......
Told you so.
Yeah, yeah, yeah...... LOL. I knew there would have been someone with that "I told you so".
