Hi everyone,
I have a question. I’ve been tring to design a front gate with stone pilasters. The city is riding my butt, but will not give me any kind of cheat sheet as to what they are looking for. Other cities in the area have them, but mine “can’t find it”
So, my plans (that I drew) got rejected for not having enough detail. So, this time, I’m going to town. I’ve drawn in the re-bar, conduit for lighting, etc, but i’m not sure about one part. The block walls (24″ tall) will terminate into an existing stucck fence (on the property line) and the side of the house (stucco too). What do i do at those unions? if I pierce the stucco on the house, i’m gonna risk opening up an access point for water. If I don’t do anything, the block wall will not be tied at the ends, and it will eventually crack at the union… or something. (clearly, i’m not too familure with this stuff). None of the books i’ve bought address this. Any ideas?
the wall will be made of 16x8x8 CMUs.
thanks,
mike.

If these walls are retaining walls holding back earth, be sure to include a drainage system. If you place rebar in the footings extending up 2', you can place the bloce over the rebar and pour some of the cores with concrete. This will stand. At the house side, use an expansion joint, and at the other end you could tie it in or use an expansion joint. This may be overkill but if you provide for drainage, there should not be a problem.

sorry, its not a retaining wall. its all level dirt.
