Allmost anything is better than standard fiberglass bats. Look into cellulose, either BIBs or regular intallation.
*Robert - I first saw BIBS last year and I love it. I think it is WAY better than batts. I used it on a large remodel and now swear by it. You wouldn't believe how well it fills the cavity. I won't be goin' back to batts, that's for sure. That bein' said, several of the more educated folks on this board have told me that water vapor molecules are smaller than the pores in fiberglass molecules, so even BIBS will not stop moisture from moving through the wall. This seems to be the big advantage to cellulose or lycene (or however that's spelled). Read through some threads here and you'll find lots of opinions about this stuff. - jb
*We have used bibs in the past and it is great. Just make sure they don't over fill the cavity. It makes it difficult to hang the drywall. This condition will also cause nail pops.
*Norman,All of the new houses I've framed (not that many -- about 25) have had BIBS and the installers always pack it in with a roller-like contraption. Never heard of any nail pops or callbacks.Robert,BIBS is a far superior system to batts. Cellulose is better than BIBS due to it's air and sealing and water distributional properties.Either way though, wear a respirator. All of it is nasty for your lungs.Dan
