Bosch miter saw

BillW | Posted in Tools for Home Building on May 10, 2005 11:32am

I hate to start the miter saw discussion again, but …

I’ve narrowed it down to 2 … the Bosch 4412L or the Craftsman 21235

Both are 12″, Dual Bevel, Laser, NOT-sliders.  This is what I want (I’m convinced!)

Both are around $330.

I just looked at the Craftsman – it does not appear to have bevel detents, even at 0 (or 90) … either it was set-up wrong in the store or I missed something, but this strikes me as un-usable – I would have to re-square it to the table every time I switched from a bevel cut to a square cut.

Does anyone have the Bosch?  Does it have detents?  Or is there some logical reason they don’t?

Thanks!

I have never seen a miter saw without detents. Somethings fishy.

Bosch is a hard core monster. I have a 12" Bosch and I can't stop the blade in a 4x6 timber no matter how fast I try cutting!

Delta 36-412- best capacity of all the non-sliders, great fence, upfront bevel controls :~)

I'm normally a Bosch guy, but.....I have a fairly new Bosch 12" saw (don't have the model number at hand....single bevel, no laser).....I was standing there watching a student use the saw, which I had just checked over because I was planning to change the blade.....something let go, and the blade guard disintegrated into shrapnel as I watched. Never seen that in over twenty years of woodworking. Not misuse on our part I would swear.

Bosch was entirely uninterested....they ascertained that it was under warranty, told me to send it off. Not sure if I will buy any more Bosch gear.

I also have a Delta 12", with no detents......hate it.

Have had several 12" Dewalts that haven't let me down, but I hear mixed reviews about newer ones.

Thanks for the input ... I thought I was losing my mind re the lack of detents on the bevel.  Do you think that's common across a lot of dual bevel saws?

There's a Bosch outlet near me - I'm going over in the am to see if they have the 4212 so I can check before ordering it.

That story about the saw disintegrating sounds terrifying - did the blade fail, or just the guard?

I just verified that the Bosch has bevel detents.  I ordered it on Amazon - $307.50 with free delivery.  Can't wait.

I know, just could not let it pass, it just came in today's e-mail.  It is what would happen to me if I had bought one.  I wondered if it was a misprint.  Mark usually does not do reconditioned stuff and it does not say recon.  Bill W might bounce it off Amazon though.  They have a pretty good return at tool Crib and if the other one is still avail he might make out for his trouble.

Something let go, and allowed the guard to crash into the blade while it was under power.....there was a flash, a bang, and flying plastic. Can't figure out exactly what happened, but I am not happy.cabinetmaker/college woodworking instructor. Cape Breton, N.S

I have the 10" Bosch slider. The mechanism that raises the guard never seemed to work smoothly, you always had to "jerk" it when lowering the blade. About a month ago my guard hit the blade also, exploding it all over the shop. One razor sharp piece of plastic nicked my ear.

not a happy bosch owner. jim

Just a thought--Ridgid has a nice saw and now they are coming back with a LIFETIME warranty!

i've used many compound saws, sliding and none sliding but never the bosch

my favourite is my 12 inch dewalt slider followed closely by my 12 inch dewalt non slider

i install kitchen cabinets usually with a 6 inch wide crown and with a really good freud blade the miters are flawless and glue up with no nails in the miters

multiple detents are great but many times i have to tweak the miter angles as little as 1/4 of a degree, so if you're into that kind of stuff, check out the detent override which is tricky on the dewalts

ps i never use the compound function, i cut my crown holding the material on a jig, so that all i use is the miter guage

caulking is not a piece of trim
