Hi Rez.
The only building conference they should hold in Boston should be titled:
HOW TO BUILD SUBWAY TUNNELS FOR DUMMIES!

snort* Got a cousin who schooled there so I've heard some stories about the 'big dig'.
That conference is the Old House Journal's gig they do a couple times a year someplace I guess.
New Orleans is the October site if I recall correctly. Was just wondering what it was like.

Never been to one sponsored by "This Old House." Three (3) years ago, I attended a building conference in Columbus, Ohio...sponsored by JLC. I had pre-registered, and it was pretty cool.
When I arrived, they had this bar code "name tag" they gave me. This tag had my home address info coded in. Anytime you wanted info from one of the selling vendors, they would scan your tag, and the following week, the info would arrive at your home via mail...this system worked out great...eliminated lots of hassles trying to obtain business cards etc. If you desired info on any product, your card was scannned. Each vendor was set up with this scanning device.
There were a few "names" there doing workshops. Gary Katz was there, as well as Rick Arnold, Myron Ferguson, and several others. It was really a low key atmosphere. No pressure, just wander around and check out the various tools, and techniques.
Lots of tools you see in magazines were being used and demonstrated. I noticed this guy demonstrating the Collins Coping Foot. I was always interested in how well that worked so I asked the guy for an informal demo. He very pollitely and quickly coped a piece of baseboard, and he did it rather well...it was only then that I noticed the demonstrator's name tag...Dave Collins, the inventer! I wound up buying that product.
JLC had a book center there too. You could buy "tons" of reading material for like half price and/or less. If I remember right, all books were at least half price.
Gary Katz was doing a demo on how to construct a fireplace mantle, Myron Ferguson did a demo on drywall finishing techniques, Rick Arnold was figuring out a layout ( for what I forget, but I do remember he goofed, and they had to tear most of what he had built as a layout apart and start over...which just goes to show everyone is human...he actually handled the mistake quite well.)
There were guys doing cabinet demo's,Hardie Plank installation demos, Anderson Window demos, etc. This whole shebang was held in a large Expo building. It was a 3 day event...I stayed for 2 days.
I really enjoyed it. Lots of new toys ( eer, tools) to look at and lots of demo tricks being shown through-out. If it ever came back in my region again, I definately attend.

Wonderedif if was worth going and seeing it was from Old House Journal I take that it was it keyed toward renovation?

There were a bunch of suppliers of new old stuff. Such as nice cast iron or even real wrought iron, copper sinks, reclaimed wood flooring, stain glass restoration, historic plasterers, etc. There was also companies that sell fake slate roofing, soapstone counters & sinks, historic linseed glazing (you can paint over it wet as soon as you finished tooling it). Also lots of seminars which I did not attened.
So it was pretty much a sales presentation deal with different seminars available as common with construction type conventions then.
Worth going tho'?

A lot of the seminar lessons had to do with true renovation and restoration as opposed to modernization and urbanization.
