It loses its shine due to taarnishing- any way to spray it, like with varnish or does that crack up over time?

If it's spotty, that means it was lacquered originally, and the lacquer is flaking -- kinda ugly. Remove it, strip it, buff it up a bit to even it out.
If it's just a gentle tarnish, though, why worry? When I see bright, bright brass, it yells out fake, fake to me.
But then I live in a house that's over 100 years old. To each his own, I guess.

There is a spray lacquer product called stay*brite or something like that. Be sure the brass is clean - use lacquer thinner to get everything off.
Personally, I like the more dull look.
Ditto what Brian wrote, except that I've never used the StayBright he mentions. Don't know if it's has any special properties, but I use any good quality spray lacquer in a spray can.
