The electrons don't care, nor do the breakers. But you should be able to leave the door open while working on it, so the lid ought to open down. You still need the standard clearance to the sides and in front of the box. All the pre-punched holes are on the (old) top and bottom, so you might not want it snug up against vertical studs, because then it would be tricky to drill though those vertical studs. Can you surface mount it? If recessed into the wall, you'll have to frame like a doorway or window to carry the load around the missing stud(s).
