Hey Lonecat,
I feel the same way. It’s almost to the point where it’s
not worth looking at, but hopefully it’ll pick up. Then
again, I painted a room in between clicks recently, and I’m
getting my mail read, and doing dishes, etc.
But I hope we don’t lose you. I’m still laughing about the
“once drove to Texas just to eat” post you did a while back!
LOL,

The amazing thing is, the content is
i so
good, that no market correction is taking place.
I use the cheapest local ISP in my area. Every few months, the service slips a bit. Lots of busy signals, disconnects, etc. But that only lasts for a few days. People won't put up with it and switch and then service is great again.
But here! The server just gets slower and slower! Hopefully they will have things improved before too much longer.
Rich Beckman
*I could go read my new FHB whilst waiting for this to load, but it has a case of the slows toooooo. Maybe it'll come today. Guess I'll go check the rain guage instead, see if the rain is quicker than this server? Joe H
*After signing in, and after clicking on this topic, it took 7 friggin minutes for it to open. Yesterday, I kept getting a message that the server had timed out! This is starting to get very irritating.Just my humble opinion...James DuHamel
*This sucks!
*HeyI just got on for the first time in b three days. . . actually got past the login page before I fell asleep and disconnected myself by falling face first onto the keyboard. . . man those key marks take days to disappear from yer forhead. . . good thing I take the glasses off to read the screen-pm
*FWIW, I've been having sporadic performance the last few days. Right now, Tuesday 8PM EST, its moving pretty quickly.Note, the ISP you use can have a big effect on speed. I was logged onto another forum I hang out in thru AOL, and it was extremely slow, taking minutes for pages to load. I logged off and back on thru my local ISP (which I'm going thru now) and things were their usual zippy self.Bob
*Yes, I agree. I've got far better things to do with my spare time than sit here staring hopefully at a computer screen.... I do so much of that already on my work time!! Get it together, powers that be, this really is ridiculous!!!!!
*I agree, it (Breaktime) sucks right now. Fortunately, my new Street Rodder came last week and there are all the ladies' magazines my wife gets to keep me entertained while I wait for the pages to come up. Kind of hard, however, to make the mental leap from "101 Ways to Satisfy Your Man" to "Roofing Felt - Yes or No?" I suppose I could read the latest "FineHomebuilding" but then I would be at the mall and not at my computer.
*No witty comments here, just the observation that Breaktime has gotten extremely slow lately, even on a DSL connection and a T1 connection!! Therefore, the problem must be at Taunton's web server. Hopefully, the Fine Homebuilding people will take notice and remedy the situation quickly, as we all still enjoy the spectacular content and organization of this forum.
*And all along I thought it was my ISP causing that little download bar to ease it's way along and then just stop DEAD .......started to nod off the other night gave up and went to bed!Hey Joe,I picked up my new issue of FHB last week at Wallmart.Gave up on subscriptions a year or so ago. They even sell it at a discount price!
*I dont know if it's just luck or what, but when I try to log on if the page doesnt come up pretty quick I cancel and start over and most of the time it really speeds up after one or two try's. Chuck
*Right now its goin so fast it about broke my neck.
*It kinds of feels like a conspiracy " Hey Bob , magazine sales are slipping whats going on ?" Well Boss that fricken web site of ours has pictures, stories and damn near everything we offer in the magazine, those people in the web site division want to add more so why should anyone buy the magazine? " Ohhhhh, I wont put up with that! Start slowing that thing down more and more each day, We'll piss off the browsers they will leave , we will disban it and sales will rise and rise, AHHHHHHaHaHaHaHa, thats the answer, I am a genius a genius I tell you."
*
Not only is this all getting absurdly slow, but once I get here I always seem to get sucked into the same trivial arguments--er,discussions.All in all this has become very unproductive for me.
good Luck all,stephen
*
Hey James, I got the same message that the server had timed out; but, it came up three times for me and after that I forgot what I was going to say. MDM.
*This is the first time I've been here in days. I try logging on but after 10+ minutes, I go to other web sites I belong to. I sure miss this board, and the many personalities, but the wait is beyond annoying. Bill Swales
*This morning everything is zipping right along. Logged on, got to this point and read every post in less than a minute. Must have something to do with the weather. The cold temperature reduces the electrical resistance. (Even if we haven't actually reached absolute zero yet).My sister-in-law wrote to say my brother is out in the snow, working on a snow and ice covered roof (20 degrees +/-) but won't go skiing because he's afraid he'll get hurt and be unable to work. Anyone else out there not taking a snow day off? It's only 33 degrees here (Jax, FL) but I'm taking the morning off to draw up some contracts. Couple more degrees and I'll go see who showed up for work this morning. :-)
*
Hi folks, this is Andy Engel posing as the sysop. I've got to admit that even sitting at my desk at Taunton, Breaktime is maddeningly slow. I'm told though, that we have just signed a contract with a web-crossing contractor. This should speed up the boards considerably. I don't know exactly when the change will occur, but I'm happy to report progress.
Andy
*
HIP-HIP-HOORAY!
(Two more hoorays when it actually happens). :-)
*
Thanks for the update Andy. I've been under the assumption that things were being done about it. Do we sound to TP like a bunch of whiners?
*
.....well I posted a reply to this 15 minutes ago (with a cable modem) but I got timed out and my post got dumped..
...Andy...caught your photo spread in this issue on curved handrail....don't you think you could have got a few more carpenters with sawdust glued to their nailbags on that stairway ?????
I mean let's try to make every photo count..huh!
man .I didn't know someone made components for curved handrail.......
*Mad Dog, you folks sound like a bunch of good customers with legitimate complaints. We're also frustrated at how long fixing this is taking, and we fervently hope that you'll all ride it out with us.Mike, as near as I could tell, I had every glue-encrusted nail bag in Boulder on that stair. Those guys were a pleasure to watch, a group of seasoned trim carpenters who worked together like a dance ensemble. That was a fun shoot. I had some free time, waiting a day for the glue to set. Dave Shotts, the guy on the cover, was decent enough to take me up over the Front Range of the Rockies in his Piper Cherokee. An amazing sight to an eastern boy.I'm not clear, though, Mike, if you thought the photos told the story well, or if you thought they could have been better. I'd really like to hear your specific criticisms. The only way to get better at this job is to hear what we do wrong. Andy

I have suffered considerable degradation in performance to this site over the past several weeks as well. My Internet access is DS-3 (45 Mbps) so I doubt the bottleneck is on my end. If a large number of dispersed clients are suffering, the bottleneck resource is likely to be at or close to the Taunton end. Net diagnostics from my Internet access are shown below. Curiously, I am getting sustained duplication of icmp echo responses. And a relatively high level of packet drops. Route trace appears to be blocked after maagnum.bbnplanet.net, which limits my view but is likely not relevant to the problem.
My recommendation is that Taunton technical staff concentrate on their own web server(s), local direction, intranet, and ISP access. Have fun and good luck.

See!! In other words mate..Tauntons server is taxidermied!!
*I don't know what the problem is or how to solve it, but maybe the Webmaster can figure it out. One thing is true, like Lonecat says; this site is getting slower and slower. If we worked this slow on the outside at our construction sites, we would all be fired!Taunton, I really like your format, its much easier than the Journal Of Light Construction guys (JLConline.com), but beware, they're coming on fast, and they have some great content too!Get busy webmaster!Davo
*I'm pretty new here but I'm already tired of waiting! I could be doing estimates which I hate doing but any things better than watching the grass grow
*Man if I lost 10-30% of my packets I'd be slow too(o). . .. already playin half a packet short.. . funny though I always thought it was i ping-pong. . . oh well, never mind.-pm

I like to sit on the porch with the laptop and pretend daddy's working. At this rate my battery is near dry by the time I get to a message without time to reply. Soon,I may have to stay inside and watch the teletubbies. Please god, don't let it come to that!

Hey Joe
It's not so bad, they repeat everything during the show, so if you happen to doze off you're not likely to miss any of the important stuff.. . go Lala!!

Folks, as I've said in other posts, Breaktime is slow here at Taunton, too. We are progressing, though, and you should expect things to speed up later this month. We've gone beyond the exploratory stage, and have contracted with a web-crossing host. David Kenney is figuring out how and when to move the boards so we don't lose archives, and don't have to shut down for long.
Once that happens, I expect to hear a sigh of relief from both the Breaktime faithful, and from a whole bunch of us here. As always, you're welcome to contact me by e-mail, [email protected], or by phone at (800) 926-8776 x 420, with further gripes, questions or suggestions.
Thanks for bearing with us.
Andy Engel
