New house will have brick vinier up 4 ft then Hardie lap.
Local brick supplier says a 3 x 3 angle laged to the concreate foundation to carry the brick is as acceptable as brick ledge built into the concreate.
Anyone have comments on that practice?

I'll take split pea with ham hocks over either of 'em any day.

Don't like split pea. prefer beans or even lentils:)
a concrete ledge is always preferred over any type of legume. However, if the supplier is referring to, say, 3" x 3" x 1/4" metal angle then that is a perfectly acceptable foundation.
I'll agree with Brickie, other than the "lagged to foundation" part.
Lintel cast in place would be ok. Nice long expansion bolts, too.
Always has bothered me, bolt-on brick ledge for being in full ground contact either now, or in the future. And, out-of-sight=out-of-mind far too often.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Ya, the out-of sight, out-of mind part was my major concern.
Probably OK in tulsa, but not up here.
I do like lentils with onions and bacon though.

Is thick a block foundation? If so whey wasn't there a brick ledge with that block? Was the brick an afterthought?
Nothing yet. It will be poured concrete and can have a ledge, but if acceptable, the angle is a lot cheaper than 3-4 inches more thickness for full basement depth.
It is my impression that using the lintel also shelters the top of exterior foundation insulation.

Well, you could cast it as a bump-out. Except that's not likely to be a stanard sort of formwork in basement country.
If this is not built yet, go ahead and have studs (like around 3/4 x 9" with an upset head probably 15" OC) put on the back of the angle iron, and build them right in.
Down here in slab-on-grad country, we just put a 2x6 horizontal arounf the edge of the forms. That yields a 5-1/2 x 1-1/2" consistent brick ledge all the way around.Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
I like to add lentils to my concreat soup.

IMHO, a steel lintel should be considered only when you have screwed up and forgot to pour a brick ledge.
That was always my understanding of the issue; that's why I wanted to see the thinking elsewhere>
