Need advice as to how to repair a portion of brick wall that is loose. At one time a tree had been planted too close to the house and caused a crack and bowing of the wall. Tree is long since gone but many of the bricks are loose as if broken loose from the brick ties that is- you can push against certain portions of the wall and the bricks will move slightly. Only convenient access is through the top where I have removed some facia board.
My first thought was to cut some pieces of hardi plank and slip those behind the wall to act as a shim and possibly to dribble some mortar between the plank and the brick. The portion that I thought of skimming/backing in this manner is approx. 4 ft. wide. However, I am concerned that doing so might cause other problems such as blocking the airspace or bridging moisture to the interior wall. Could be short of tearing down the wall and replacing the brick its best to leave it alone.
