I’m thinking about finishing off some basement space in my girlfriend’s 1931-vintage home. The basement is a concrete slab with poured concrete walls. It slopes east-west and is only partially buried in the back, leaving four openings for south-facing windows. At the west wall of the basement, the ceiling height is probably about 6’2″ or so, and then by the time it reaches the east wall, 34′ later, it’s in the mid to upper 7 foot range. The nice thing is, it’s dry as a bone and looks like it always has been (so far), and the way the floor slopes, any water that did get in would flow out a garage door at the east wall.
I want to take over the west end of the basement, an area roughly 23×12. I want to make the enter 23′ west wall into built-in shelving, and I’ve been thinking how nice it’d look if I could use brick for the other three walls. This sounds like a real pain in the ass given the slope of the floor, but even besides that, does this sound like a reasonable idea, or is it kinda goofy?
