OK, so after reading the article in the latest issue, I’m really considering building a set of my own doors to replace the existing French doors I have that are coming apart.
For those of you that have read that article, do you think there should be any additional measures for weatherproofing or sealing for exterior doors that will face weather and moisture exposure? Maybe a bottom strip embedded in the door of either copper or stainless steel? Of course, pressure-treated or borate-treated lumber would be used but what other additional measures do you think could be taken to prevent future problems?

I think you have the main idea down pat. Just make sure to cover everything that can possibly allow a water leak in. When I repair doors the obvious is often overlooked. If you use a panel, then make sure the edge of it is sealed where it goes behind the stiles and rails. By this I mean use a caulk of some sort to seal against moisture intrusion (did one of those 2-3 weeks ago). If you are painting the door, be sure to prime all exposed surfaces including the bottom and top edges. The above mentioned door had not paint on the bottom edge and it rotted out. Of course I would use type III or similar glue that is water proof, or epoxy. There is also an article in the archives page that shows some more details on the door building. If you are using glass then be sure that the water cannot intrude beside that too.
