I am planning to build a stone facade above my fireplace mantle to give the impression of a limestone fireplace. I will be using limestone from my area that is about 2” thick and roughly 12” square. I am planning on using angle iron (w/lag bolts) and wire lath mesh to support the flat stones and mortar. I am also planning on using cement that is reinforced with fibers for additional strength.
Any insights, instructions or direction would be welcome. Thanks

If you want it to look like it was built of the limestone you should run the grain of the stone horizontal . IMHO anyway. If you cut the stones to a width of 2-3" and lay them in a running bond I dont think you will need any fibers in the morter. When I lay up stone walls I use portland cement and sand for my morter. Maybe someone will give you another way to do this.

Around here we use Type N mortar which is a mix of portland cement and lime, all you have to do is add water and sand.
It's a bit easier to use, (more workable, plasticity, etc.).
Build up your corners first and then fill in. Keep your mortar joints back until you've finished laying the stone, then joint them all at the same time. You'll get consistent color and finish. If you're having trouble getting the stone to stay in place, use a thicker mortar mix, and you can even run tie wire around to hold it in place. Hope this helps. Rod
