   I really don't think there is a code for a "sleeping loft" per se. If it says "sleeping loft" on the plans you will likely need an egress window/door to the exterior. The size of the required egress varies from state to state. If it has a railing it probably has to follow railing code requirements like no more than 4" between ballasters, 36" height (may very by state), and some states prohibit ladder like railing structures.

   Codes have requirements for the PSF rating for floors in sleeping areas....

   There is a code minimum size for a sleeping room....

   Really though, you say "the code" which kinda insinuates we are all under the same code - which we are not.

   BTW - where is the spell check button on this dang thing????

   Call it a den or study, not a sleeping loft.

   This issue is usually modified by the local authority, so it's best to call your local office. Some allow them, some don't, and the restrictions seem to vary.

   They might refer to it as a "sleeping mezzanine".

   In brief, here are the variations in the requirements for a few towns around me:

   1) one town requires a stairway (can be spiral) the others allow "ladders" with no specifications, one specifies "ship ladder" and has rung specifications.

   2) Some have a minimum headroom in the loft of 6-8, others 7-0.

   3) Some restrict the size of the loft to 1/3rd of the square footage of the room that it is in. Other have no requirement.

   Only thing I've found is to use IESpell, which is a free download. Don't know if there is a firefox equivalent.

   The Google toolbar has a decent spell checker.

   I just with they made the Google toolbar for Chrome!
