I just looked at a job that calls for extending a pressure-treated pine deck over a set of 6′ x 5′ steel basement bulkhead doors. The doors would be completely under the deck but there needs to be a way to open the doors on rare occasions, such as when a new boiler or water heater was needed. I imagine 2 or 3 removable deck sections supported by ledgers with a bolt-on/off rim joist and skirt at the outer edge. (The deck is about 30″ above grade.) How come I never get the easy jobs?
Has anyone done this in a way they found reasonably attractive and functional? I’d love to hear about it. Anyone ever have a code problem doing this? Thanks!
