…and I am not familiar with the area. The yellow pages are a good start, but I have no way to judge the reputation of a company or individual as I would here in CT. Could some local builders recommend a good mason, and a good drywall contractor. Also, who has a good reputation for septic installations. Many thanks.

I am not in that area, but first Q that would be in my mind is whether you are a GC or a HO DIY acting as GC?

Ah...I am a DIY homeowner. I will be doing all of the work excepting the trades mentioned in the above post. If time allows I may tackle some of that as well. Drywall...well that could take me a year!
Has anyone in between Rutland and Manchester seen this thread yet?
I'm south - in North Bennington - but do alot of work in Manchester.
My initial reaction is that if he's looking for work this summer he's probably about 6 months behind in his 'find a contractor' homework. Everyone I know - even the mediocre guys - are booked through the summer. I've heard lots of stories about 2nd home owners bringing up their own contractors from 'home' to get projects done.
One of the divisions of Brown Enterprises in Manchester Center across from Rk Miles does septic systems, I have no experience with them other than using their rental yard (great to work with).
Septic system rules have a major state level change that takes effect as of July 1. I don't know if a permit grandfathers you or if the system has to be in by July 1. Good luck.

Give him a break, Norm. He's only looking for a mason, a rocker, and somebody to do a septic system.
I don't know how it is over there, but on my side of Lake Champlain, the work level is down considerably, and subs can be found.
Busy, busy on this side of the lake. I don't see all the spec building going on that was prevalent the past few years but remodeling is holding its own.

This will be our primary home...when our current home sells (hopefully soon!) we will be living on site for a while. I have lined up Larry White in Danby to do the septic, and David Wright to do the chimney. Now I just need a reputable sheetrock installer. In our area the quality of sheetrock installation, especially taping can be all over the map. I work slow, so this work won't be done until Novemberish....so don't worry about the schedule...let's hear who does a good job taping. Thanks.
We are qualified to be grandfathered in if the house is habitable by July 1. I wondered if a camper tied into the septic system would qualify? It won't change the engineered system at all, just the paperwork involved. The town doesn't care what we do, it's all in the State's hands.
Here in the northern Adirondacks, across the lake from you, the lumberyards sell all the gyprock. There aren't specialty rock supply houses like there are in the larger markets.
The manager at a good yard can give you some leads, I'm sure. Get in touch with a few, go and see them at a job they're on, at end-of-day or coffee and donuts time, and ask if you can take a look around.
You'll make out OK, I'm sure.
