Customer has two fireplaces. One has been used twice in 24 years and is in the way of new furniture arrangement. Exterior is all brick over block. Interior has brick hearth, brick veneer on either side of firebox to ceiling. Firebox has ash dump to exterior. Anybody foresee any problem with closing the damper and sealing with ???. Same for ash dump? Frame in box opening, insulate and rock over with 5/8″ (original wall was 1/2″ covered with glued paneling–they had someone put 5/8 over the paneling on part of the wall–I would shim out the balance and continue with 5/8. A square tile forms the exit at the top of the chimney (two storys high). It would be capped. Anyone think of any problem with the chimney just sitting there? They had glass doors over it but probably had some circulation through leakage around the damper. Maybe NOT seal the interior ash dump flap and allow a LITTLE air to infiltrate through the exterior clean out door? This is Denver, CO. Not high humidity. Any quick thoughts? Thor

just make sure the cap is a good one and is not going to deteriorate....
a lot of old houses that once had a fireplace in every room wind up as you describe....
*Mike is right, a lot of fireplaces are now hidden behind walls. Make sure that the chimney is sealed at the top properly and close her up. If you ever change your mind, it's still there for you to uncap and use.Gabe
