I am looking for some articles relating to building stone walls. I am looking to build a retaining wall with a stone walk in a “L” shape approximately 55 feet long by 4 feet high.
I am hoping to find some information on estimating the amount of stone I need and how I should construct the wall itself.
Any information is appreciated.

Dave - there was an article in one of the last 2 or 3 FHB on laying stone walls.

The plaster ceilings in two rooms of my 50-year-old house have cracks that I restore about every five years. They are not wide cracks, but they aren't hairlines either. The plaster surrounding them and the rest of the ceilings is sound. I want to cover these ceilings with drywall to eliminate the maintenance.
I have thought of using 1/4" drywall screwed through the old ceiling into the joists, which are 16" o.c. I think the 1/4" will be much easier to handle than 1/2", a consideration since I won't have much help.
Is this a feasible idea? That is, will 1/4" likely work without bowing, and are drywall screws strong enough to penetrate the old plaster and the ceiling joists (tough Southern yellow pine) without shearing off?
Thanks for your information.

..Bob.. go back up to the top of this Folder "Construction Techniques" and punch the button "new posts" thinl up a zippy title like "Plaste ceiling repair" and then restate your problem.. your in a deadend here..
have you talked to a plasterer..
where do you live...
you might be able to get it permanently repaired without the trouble and mess of drywall..
repost it and we'll explore the possibilities..

*Naw, Mike. I think Bob is in the right thread, it's just that he's trying to turn the discussion too early. Protocol says one should wait 8-10 posts, Bob is just jumping the gun.Puts a new light on it, doesn't it?
*Uh, what kind of windows should I buy?

*It was issue #126. Here is a brief excerpt from the article..Rich Beckman

The rule of thumb I use for quantity of rock for stone walls is 20 to 30% extra if you want it to look good, less if it looks good enough from your house (providing it's not your backyard) Best of luck from an old stoner.
