I know you can use a piece of 1/2″ plywood to build up a 2x header to make it 3 1/2″ wide (2×4 plates) but what do you use to build up a header for a 2×6 wall?
Thanks

Three headers and two pieces of plywood.
Or two headers and 2X3 spacers.
Thanks Boss.
Out west we just use 6x material depending on height needed.Any ideas why we do that when other area use a plywood sandwich header?ML

Maybe because 6X material is available in your area?
We don't even have 4X headers here, much less 6X. Must have something to do with local lumber availability...

I can't remember the last time I saw either4x or 6x. Must be nice!
Whats do you use for posts? No 6x6 or 4x6 or 4x4 fir? ML
"Whats do you use for posts? No 6x6 or 4x6 or 4x4 fir?"
No fir here in the midwest.
We can get treated 4X4 and 6X6 posts - They're generally used for decks and pole barns, respectively.
But they're not big enough for header material.

Where we frame, 2x6 walls are the standard. We don't need the expense of the extra 2x for our headers. What we do is nail 2x's togher and nail a 2x6 on the bottom. Works well and allows insulation to be used on the header.
That's a good idea. Thanks
Thats what I do too in most cases. Bob's next test date: 12/10/07
