The bulkhead door over my cellar steps has been covered with a tarp for 3 years to prevent water from leaking in. Prefabricated bulkhead doors will not fit the opening. It is not long enough. My boyfriend is considering extending the concrete walls so they are long enough. This would involve adding a wedge of concrete on top of the existing walls that extends beyond the bottom at least 10 inches more and rebuilding the concrete (which needs replacing) leading to the steps. Is this a good idea?
I suggested custom building a door (he is a woodworker) but cannot find plans. Where can I find plans for a water-tight bulkhead door over my cellar stairs?

I've installed a few "Bilco's" in the past. Other brands too......they all are pretty much the same. As in, very basic. I'm guessing a metal shop in the area could, with a basic drawing and some measurments, make up something similar.
Now that I think about it.....I'd buy a Bilco, and if length is the only limiting factor, take the Bilco to the metal shop.....and have them "stretch" the side triangle pieces, and the doors to the necessary length. I'd imagine it pretty simply to weld in a few pieces and get it all to fit.
If the new angle is unworkable, they could just make new sides to fit the lenghtened doors, and use the existing hardware. Jeff
*Step One: I do my own. 2 sheets of 3/4 ACX with 2x4 studs on edge around the perimeter.Step Two: Go to a Sheet Metal Fabricator, and have him build a top for it.Step Three: Add roofing cement and 15 felt, then the sheet metal top. Add a hasp, and your good to go..........Fish Worship? Is it wrong?
*Scooter- depends on the fish..I rebuilt a cellar door for a buddy a few years ago, using 3/4" PT plywood and 1X for rails and stiles (which he has since painted). Used a counter flashed piece of sheet rubber to flap down over the top to keep weather out. Replaced an old wooden door that had resumed soil status. The old concrete "triangles" on either side were wickedly out of parallel (up and down and side to side), so I spent most of my time fudging that with wood. Worked out fine though. No Bilco would have fit, and custom fabbing a metal one was too pricey.
