Quickbooks doesn't do payroll--but it has an integrated web-based service (Paycycle.com) that does. It's spendy ($45/month) but does direct deposit, tax form preparation, and electronic payment of taxes. And it exports cleanly to Quickbooks.
Generally speaking on the Mac platform if payroll integration is your pet peeve you'll probably want to check out MYOB's Account Edge (and First Edge too) but overall both the MYOB and Intuit programs have their strengths and weaknesses so I consider the contest to be a draw between Account Edge and Quickbooks. (There is also Turtle Creek's Goldenseal for accounting too but I think their user interface is just so archaic that I've never really looked at it close enough to really evaluate it).
I also have some FileMaker based Estimating and Production related solutions that I've designed with the Mac in mind but given that FileMaker itself is a cross platform solution the software runs on both Mac and Windows and they are available as both Runtime and Filemaker powered so you don't necessarily need FileMaker to run them. 360Difference.

Stay away from Aatrix for mac- it ties in with quickbooks too- bad customer service. we used them for years then gave up and went to a payroll service @ $100 a month for 5 employees.
I use QuickBooks Pro for accounting, and Aatrix for payroll checks. I had an accountant set up categories for QuickBooks, after that, it's pretty simple, just not always intuitive. Can't say I'm always happy with either, but they do work, and best part, no math mistakes<G> Hey, pocket doors can't come off the track if they're nailed open
Aatrix is the 7th circle of hell. If I could have back the hours of my life spent trying to make that broken POS work I would be years younger, and have far fewer grey hairs.
I agree they do things that are really dumb
like mail out the tax table update during Christmas week so you have to mess with it during the holidays or 1st week of the year (tax tables probably do not change after September) we are really glad to be done with them. I also spent many hours- many of their update instructions had double meanings - hard to follow
