could or should alum. soffet be calked to brick exterior if not why ? too much movement of structure(setteling). House was built in ’50 . Alot of space between soffet j channel and brick. Please any info would be helpful

Is there no frieze board? If not you have 2 options:
1) Go ahead and caulk it with a good polyurethane (OSI is one brand) caulk...good luck tooling it over brick with gaps over about 1/4". Use backer rod if it's over 1/4"...it'll save you time and caulk.
2) Have it redone correctly. It sounds like someone attached the J kinda crabby and over the years its worked it way loose (or the nails/staples rusted out).

having it or doing it the right way would take too much time and not worth the effort.
there is no friese board and Iam not sure how it was attached, just that there is a gap after all these years. Was not 100% sure I could calk Wanted to ask someone else opinnion. Thanks alot for the info
