call out to Andy Engel re: treads
I just wanted to thank Andy for a contribution he made to what I thought was a Fine Homebuilding issue, but ended up being a Taunton book on building stairs. He did a chapter on shop-built stair-cases. There is a picture showing him gang cutting treads for open skirt returns. I decided to try this on my first stain grade open skirt project last weekend. I used my Festool T55(the small one) and the guide. Except for the fact that the saw has a max of 47 degrees!!!, it went terrific. When I realized that the 45 degree mark is at the end of the indicator (duh!) I recut and used my sliding CMS and jig saw to finish the cuts. It came out terrific, and I am finishing the case tomorrow. Nothing special, given the artwork I’ve seen in the photo sections, but it saved me a lot of time and I grateful Andy put that chapter in the book. (there are other good chapters in there, as well!!)

Last I heard, Andy was taking a job at JLC as a special publications editor or something like that. He hasn't posted here at FineHomebuilding in quite a while. Probably too busy ... or maybe it's frowned upon now that he's workin' for "the competition"?!

okay...makes sense. I'll have to review some of those issues to see what he's doing. thanks."The nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a governmental program" -Ronald Reagan
It's true, Andy is now the chief editor of Hanley Wood's Professional Deck Builder magazine. Not too bad of a rag neither.
He doesn't pop up on the forum much anymore, but he's certainly still welcome. I will pass your message along to him. Justin Fink - FHB Editorial

I just emailed him a link to the thread - if he still keeps that addy active.

Andy has two sign ons. Just a slightly different syntax of his name I think. The one you replied to is the old one.

heh heh. Sounds like sometime he had trouble logging on too.The very simplicity and nakedness of man's life in the primitive ages imply this advantage, at least, that they left him still but a sojourner in nature. When he was refreshed with food and sleep, he contemplated his journey again. He dwelt, as it were, in a tent in this world, and was either threading the valleys, or crossing the plains, or climbing the mountain-tops. But lo! men have become the tools of their tools.-Thoreau's Walden
Glad that trick worked out for you. I still do it that way, and it's the detail I show in the book I wrote for Taunton. That's due out in November.
Be well,
Andy

Hi Gents. I'm alive and kicking. Busy as a one armed paper hanger, though, between work, Scouts, and running for Board of Ed.
I am working for the competition as Justin and Piffin said, and much as I like this place and the people, it just doesn't feel quite right to spend so much time here anymore. In fact, I doubt that anyone at either Taunton or Hanley Wood gives a rat's patootie if I hang here or not, but it doesn't feel professional to me.
If someone addresses a post to me, I'm sure to be notified, and I'll probably reply. And you shouldn't hesitate to email. Especially anyone who wants to get together for a bike ride. But otherwise, it's right for me to move on.
Justin - Thanks for the good words. I like the new look here. Well done.Andy

Just finished the install Saturday. Got nice comments on the returns, thanks to you. We wish you well with your new digs. Glad I was able to pass on the good experience.
