As many of you know Fine Homebuilding is co-sponsoring Builders Trade ’05 show in Worcester Mass on Feb 3rd and 4th. In the booth this year we will have a “slide show” that will be running during the entire 2 day show that we hope to use to show case the work of you folks here on Breaktime. So if you have a project that you would like to have the world see, then send us your digital images.
Some things to keep in mind: All images should be as hi a resolution as possible. Here are some guidelines to follow: If sending at 72 DPI then the image should be at least 1500 X 1800 if your sending 300 DPI then make the image(s) at least 600X900. The highest resolution that your camera provides will work fine, think the bigger the better if you want, as this will be running on a 62″ TV (that we will be raffling off by the way). Be sure to compress them so that they transport through email correctly. Send as many images as you want we want this slide show to run for long time.
All submissions should be sent to [email protected], be sure to use “Builders Trade ’05 images” in the subject line.
Deadline for submissions is January 24th. As Dan pointed out in the other thread please dont send a ton of images from the same project but Do send a ton of images from as many projects as you want.
Thanks and we’ll see you at the show: http://www.builderstrade.com/
Questions on resolution, compression or anything related to this please don’t hesitate to ask.

My 3 megapixel camera on high resolution takes a 2.8 megabyte picture. With a 5meg email cap, that would be ONE picture per email. You get some of these folks with 2-50 pics in a series detailing a project and they're gonna be there all day trying to send them (cuz 1 picture isn't enough on many of those outstanding projects). And 3 mp is a fairly small picture size nowadays.
You might want to holler at your IT guys and have them raise that limit. Either that, or come up with a webpage they can upload them to (doesn't BT limit to 2 meg?)

Having been around graphics and graphic files since before the internet was a household word, I take it for granted that everyone knows what compression is and how it works. So yes at 2.8 megs our email system would only be able to handle 1 image per email thats where compression comes in.
I can take a 3 meg file and "compress" it down to190k (1 meg = 1000k) so that when it is opened on the receiving end the quality of the image has suffered little if any. There are many programs out there that will allow a user to compress a file and in fact most (if not all)images come off of the camera in a compressed mode. When you click on them to open you are uncompressing them.
For instance jpg is a compressed file format. Its just that the amount of compression varies depending on the settings one uses when saving the file or the settings that are within a camera. (When saving for our use then the highest possible quality setting is what we want but should still yield a relativly small file). So if you are able to take the image directly from the camera and enter it into your email you will see that the attached file is much smaller than the 2.8 megs that it is when opened.
I hope this answers some of the questions but please if not ask. We really want this slide show to showcase the incredible talents that you folks have! So send us your best. -M

That can be done with an uncompressed file format such as a BMP or EXE, and on uncompressing or unzipping, you will have no loss or distortion. You won't get the kind of compression you are talking about with a BMP however. I just test zipped a 14MB BMP with Winzip and got it down to 12MB. BTW, it was a 1.8MB JPG I saved as a BMP. Both BMP and JPG are 2592px x 1952px x 16M colors
>>For instance jpg is a compressed file format. Its just that the amount of compression varies depending on the settings one uses when saving the file or the settings that are within a camera.
And cannot be compressed further with out lowering quality. I Winzipped a JPG straight from the camera and only got 2% compression.
>>(When saving for our use then the highest possible quality setting is what we want but should still yield a relativly small file).
Resizing that picture to 800x600 x 300dpi gave 409KB filesize however, when viewed at the same screen size (about 36" diagonal) as the original 1.8MB, there was severe pixelation.

I think you guys are making a mountain out of a mole hill. They ask for a simple request to supply pictures and we're off on tangents about BIGGER [??!!] file sizes in uncompressible bitmap format. Every digital camera made today is capable of saving pictures in jpg format with highly acceptable quality below 400k file size. Folks, when in doubt, read the manual, and experiment a bit before complaining about a restiction of 5 megs.

Hi Graham, welcome to BreakTime if you're new. In this case we're talking about blowing up a picture of a molehill to make it look like a mountain ;)
As I suggested to Mike, go ahead and take your 40k or 400k picture and zoom it up to 1000% or so and tell me if it looks as good as the 3-6 meg original picture that the camera pumped out (assuming max resolution) at 1000%.
Granted, a 40-400k picture can look grand on a 17" monitor, but it doesn't always translate to 61" quite so well.
Between the people emailing and snail-mailing, hopefully they'll get enough good pics. And even if some of the pics are a bit small, they could always collage them or just stick them in next to text or some such.

I'm with SamT on this one. And the way you've got it setup now, you're fighting an uphill battle. Some of the folks who are going to have the real "wow" projects aren't the ones who have the knowledge to play a lot with picture file size or play with various compression programs. Just ask Rez about that ;)
Most dig cameras I've stumbled across (just regular digitals, not professional setups) use JPG as their format, so that 2.8 meg file is already compressed, so it would be a major job to reduce them without reducing the picture size or quality. And it sounds like you want as big a picture as possible....so you really want the 3meg files.
Which means you need to make it a downhill process. Just give them someplace they can dump the pics, whatever the size... As it is, your dial-up'ers are gonna have to sit there about 5 mins per meg. And I'm sure they'd like to help you out, but they might start wondering if they really want to spend the whole night uploading pics.
And me... well I don't have anything that qualifies as "fine homebuilding". Now let me know if you want something on crappy 'muddling. ;)

You really have a lot of good pictures to choose from. You could spend 20 mins just on Stan Foster's stair projects. And greencu has had some neat projects. And about 50 other folks.
I really gotta figure out someday how to send photos !
24441.1 is one old thread that contains a lot of data regarding Irfanview.
You could use the search function with 'irfanview' typed in. It will take you to other threads discussing different questions regarding sending and downsizing.
Cheers

If you mean the ones people have uploaded to BT? They wouldn't work for what he wants. Those 50k pictures work well when posting them to a BT thread where they display 6"x6", but if you super-size them to 61", they would look grainy as heck.
If you don't believe me, view a 50k picture file in whatever image program you like. Then zoom it up to about 1000%. She ain't gonna be crystal clear any more.
But what they could do is find the pics they like and then contact the people who posted them to get the original sized (big) pics.

Mark, what if I sent you a cd with pics of my work worth looking at. At original 3.1 mp taken size at the best resolution........
Would you be able to do something with it?

Mark,
When you first brought this up in the other thread, you said we could send you the actual physical photos via the U.S. Postal Service (I believe it is still functioning).
Is this still true??

Another day, another tool.
OK let me try and answer all of the questions together here in one response.
Images on CD: YES YES YES sending the original Hi Res Pics on a Cd would be the absolute best way. Please keep in mind that our Deadline for this is Jan. 24th which is the main reason we did not ask for this mthod originally.
JPG Files via email: If you can compress a file without loosing any resolution then send them via email even if it means only 1 per email. If you have the abilty to compress a file then please do so. Keep in mind the bigger the better. Also please do them as Attachments not embedded in the email.
Printed Images: Yes they can also be sent to us through snail mail
The images that are posted in Breaktime would not be hi enough resolution to use for what we want (as pointed out)
Email them to [email protected] or snail mail them to Dan Morrison, Fine Homebuilding, 101 South Main Street Newtown, CT 06470
So send away. -MarkSYSOP[email protected]
Hey Mark--
What about on-screen credit for the pix? Are you going to overlay each photo with the name & contact info of the builder?
I mean, do we have to take the blame, too???

One serious suggestion, though: Why don't you go through the stuff already uploaded to BT's server and e-mail the owners of photos that you like, asking for full-format versions of those specific photos? Save both you and us a lot of bandwidth and licking little sticky pieces of paper....Dinosaur

I've been doing that some already. And yes we are planning on putting the info on the pic as long as it is supplied to us.SYSOP[email protected]

Well, what about this option: folks upload their jpgs on a free web pic site like "OFOTO..." or one of the other free web sites for hosting pics.
Then (and this is how OFOTO... works; while you're at your web hosted photo album, enter email of someone you're giving rights to view/download and that extends them electronic "invite" and access. So SYSOPS could electronically view them and grab them right off the web.
Also (and mebbe there's emails going on to this effect apart and off the Forum but...) I KNOW some BTers have their own websites...so could just steer FHB to those too.Vini, Vidi, Vino! I came, I saw, I wine!
FWIW...I think OPHOTO can be a dangerous thing, my AV and spamminator really hate it..I dunno what's the real deal tho, have not really took the time to find out what it might be attempting. But, if it works OK for you..go for it.

Watch out for the edges, it's really fast out there...
OFOTO has been working great for me, friends, relatives for some time now. Posted my Sept SA trip photos (all 200+ of them) on there so could readily and easily share them with friends and family across the nation, etc. Ditto for thanksgiving pics, and now XMAS trip pics too. Not having any problems with it. Sorry to hear you are?were?
I'm running Adware and Spybot on my home PC, in continuous update mode. Not having any problems at all...Vini, Vidi, Vino! I came, I saw, I wine!
Thanks, thats good news..probly the AOL from hell messing with stuff.I know ya don't wanna know how bad THAT is..LOLBe well..and ofoto'ing..
