Anybody out there with some real world experience using a camper shell hoist? I have a Leer fiberglass camper shell on the back of my pickup and I’d love to easily remove it and store it above the truck in the garage. Any recommendations of good manufacturers and/or brands to avoid? Any experience using one? How solid are they? Can I feel safe dangling my shell above the hood of my truck 10′ in the air? Thoughts?????

Is this just a truck cap?
Or a big "Camper top" for sleeping in.
I have an old Jeep with a hard top that I hang from the garage ceiling every summer with no problems.
I back in, unbolt, lift the top about 1 1/2" off the body and support with 2x4's, sling a single length of rope up to four bicycle hooks on the ceiling, pull rope to take tension off of 2x4's, Carefully drive out of garage, Then push top tight to ceiling hooks and tie off securely.
The first time was a little tricky, I tried it alone first.
Now that I've had some practice, I can get it up real quick every time ;)
It would be much easier with some pulleys at the ceiling, but it's only once a year so I didn't thimk it was worth it.
I have an aluminum shell on a Ford Ranger. I think it weighs a 100 lb. I hung some hooks on the rafters in the garage. With chains, s-hooks and 2x3s I lift mine off real easy. I get it about three inches off the truck and drive off. Unless a load blocks it, I back right under it. I takes about an hour to take off and put on, round trip. I put new lock nuts on every time I re-install it. When the truck is out from under it I wash the windows. HTH
Reminds me of my Toyota and a toolbox side cap. I slung it to a walnut tree and drove out from under it, problem was it was in a cow pasture..it turned into thier scratching post..man they had it all wadded up with fur..never do that again.
