Can Any Exterior Post (steel or PT wood) be used to support second floor in Frame Construction

In this expansion project I’m planning for, there is a space that is 32′ wide that is for a 4-bay garage (town does allow this size of a garage). For various reasons, the doors to the garage are offset from the outside wall of the second floor creating an alcove that is 4′ deep by 32′ wide. I want to have a post (steel or PT wood) 16′ On-Center, to support an LVL beam to support this “cantilevered” space. Is this allowed by Building code? Thanks.
