Well, another pilgrimage to the neighborhood beLowes and I walk in to see a bargain cart sitting full of stuff.
Ya know, you gotta kinda mosey over there and see whats what. Trashed PT deck balustrades and the like.
And a pile of 50 84″ prestained, coated, oak T-Molding, Sq.Nose, etc. colored in red oak, clear, etc.
I start culling the clear and think, shoot, take the pile. Sign said ‘All items on this cart 99 cents
I look at the upc retail pricing stickers and it choked me at $24.89 a piece. Must be display space carries a premium value and they just don’t want the stuff around.
Gotta love those discontinued items. I’ll find a use for ’em.

I'm getting to think your a pack rat! I only say this cause I think that I have the same problem.
Are you running out of storage space?
Doug
i got a $225 sink for $20 at lowes last month. Still have no idea what to do with it.
Still have no idea what to do with it.
Build a frame of PT to fit the sink, & set it up by the bbq. Pick a spot with good drainage. If it's a two bowl sink, put a strainer in one side, and pipe that to your run-off. Then, put a 5 gallon bucket under the other side as your "disposal" (if you happen to have a worn out strainer basket for your 5 gallon gumbo pot, this is even better, as it fits the bucket . . . )
Or, like a cynical person I know, create a nice frame for the sink, get a peice of plex for that "art" effect, and hang it on the wall. A brass plaque will be needed: "Dream House, Phase One (Some Assembly Required)." [The sink is the only thing he & the wife have agreed on for the entire dream house project, which presently is a log cabin, Bavarian hunting lodge, greek revival neo-colonial, with Louis XIV furnishings . . . ]Occupational hazard of my occupation not being around (sorry Bubba)
Am in process of building an 18ft dia dome shed TO HOUSE ALL MY LOWES JUNK! ROAR!
Atta boy, I rent two storage units in Iowa and my moms garage is so full that she can barley squeze the car in.
When I die my kids are going to be calling me all kinds of unplesant things.

this is way off topic, but you said Lowes, and it came to my mind...
i hate how they dont keep chalk lines in the tool section. theyre in the "project center". why cant they just be in the tool section? its a tool, correct? chances are, i dont really wanna be buying my 4th chalk line in 6 months anyway. they dont need to make it even more painful
I don't think that the Lowes in this area have a project center.
But I was looking for an DW sanding spong with an angled edge for getting into the corners. They had the square edge by the DW tools along with sanding poles, screens, and sandpaper and knifes.
But they had the angled spongs down by the paint supplies along with more (and it appeared a different brands) sanders and taping tools.
Now if you want sheet sandpaper it is in the painting section.
But if you want sandpaper for a ROS then it is in the tools section.
For all its frustration in buying the stuff u really need Lowes is incredibly easy to get them to knock down prices on boogered stuff.I did a whole sewing shop for a seamstress making worktables with luan door blanks that I got from lowes because they had lil dings in them.
But get real..u've think u got over on them but 95% of the time they gottcha by the cojones. The plumbing manager at our lowes in Beckley ,WV said they just finished their 4th $1,000,000 month ;with 1/3rd of the staff theyve ever had.Now theyre building the largest one in WV rite behind the store.Alot of the old staff is just quitting cuz they just cant handle it.
Couple sacred laws for dealing with Lowes(feel free to add)
1) DONT EVER buy anything resealed with masking or scotch tape!
2) They will never call you back!
3) You will never get the same person twice when u call back!
40 Buy evrything(plus replacemnts) of the style or brand u want now because come back next week they'll have changed suppliers or brands.
5. Don't even bother with the associates--save time and go directly to the manager. If you go to an associate, they won't know, and they'll work their way up the chain of command until they get to the manager anyway.
6. If someone quotes you a sale price over the phone, get their name.
7. (May apply only to Menards) If they tell you to pick up your special order in the yard, don't. Going to the yard always takes an eternity. You'll end up trapped behind some schmoe blocking the exit while trying to load a whole pallet of drywall into his minivan. Get a cart, go find your order, and take it out through the front of the store.
8. Remember that in a Dewey Decimal world, these stores seem to stock their shelves according to the Library of Congress system. Where's wood glue? In tools, of course. Where are the 100' tape measures? In landscaping. Corner beads will be near drywall, right? Nope. Corner beads are next to drywall tools, which are over by the screws.
9. Real wood doesn't come individually shrinkwrapped.
from the latest TOH (yeah, yeah, i read it too):

There it was, a 4x8 sheet of white melamine marked down from $50 to $10- just the thing to resurface my workbench. So I grabbed it. As I wheeled it to my station wagon, a gust of wind caught the sheet like a mainsail and launched it right into my taillight. Still wrestling with the wind, I secured the sheet onto the roof rack- but not before snapping the radio antenna. On my way home, a police officer waved me over and issued a ticket for the busted taillight.
The next day, I set out to find a replacement taillight. I called all the junkyards in the area, but the car was too new. Finally I gave up and called the dealer. They didn't have the taillight or the antenna in stock, but they'd order both for a mere $85- labor not included.
All told, that bargain sheet of melamine cost me a cool $235. Since then, whenever I purchase lumber, I pay the $25 delivery fee. If you ask me, it's a bargain.

Y'all might be interested to know that Lowes messes with their suppliers, too.
Got a call yesterday from the salesman I do work for. He said the last job I did for him had gone up several hundred dollars, and lowes was refusing to pay the difference.
Apparently we quoted the job a couple of months ago. We only guarantee prices for 30 days. Lowes calls up a few days ago and orders the job, AFTER the quote had expired. But the HO had changed things, so what we were going to end up building was different than what had been quoted.
So I layed it out, designed all the trusses, and sent it down to the main office for pricing. Lowes flipped out, and said they weren't paying any more for the trusses. After all, it was the SAME house. (The floor plan hadn't changed, so I guess that means the house hadn't changed as far as they were concerned)
Anyway, the salesman asks me if I can design the trusses to make them any cheaper. I said I didn't think so, unless they were willing to revise some things.
He asks me what I think, and I say tell 'em to shove the job. We have more business right now than we can handle. It's stupid to cut prices to get a job when we didn't do anyhing wrong.
.
Is there a point to this story??? Not really. Just thought you'd like to know that the big boxes mess with their suppliers to.Government is the great fiction, through which everybody endeavors to live at the expense of everybody else -- Frederic Bastiat
yea everytime I go there I walk through the tool area and look for the yellow discount stickers. I know one of these days Im gonna hit pay dirt. im gonna have to start checking the discount wood like you do also now....Geeze I hope your happy I spend enough time in there as it is now I got to spend more.

Ron- I think your back with your buddies at the HomeTeacup. I wasn't aware that beLowes had a discount wood rack.
I find if you go looking for deals you end up wasting time. Best just to go about the norm and let yourself stumble upon them.
Then you can have the fun of nursing your sickness by adding more to the pile of Hardwaremisc. & Supply Co. you have unwittingly created.
Is that a white elephant I see?
I fell for it too..I found a 200.00$ hanging porch type lamp..aged brass or copper..bubbles in the glass..kinda Arts/Crafts era design..way cool. Clearance cuz it was a display..39.00$
Well, I don't have a porch yet, and I do have ciel fans in all my overhead boxes..hmmm? So it stayed in the van for awhile..then the dog stepped on it and busted the glass and bulbs..he was OK..just a stupid moment.
The glass shop wants 40 bucks fer new glass like the stuff that was in it..LOL
Oh, well it looks good just sittin on the floor for now.
