Has anyone ever had a callback after they capped a PT post or facia board? The manufacture says not to. We do it anyway and no probs. Something about dissimilar metals. Thanks.

What are you capping the posts with? Copper, brass, galvanized? Is the problem supposed to be the arsenic or the copper in the PT causing galvanic action on the metal used for the cap? Given that the arsenic is pretty tightly bound in the wood until the wood starts to disintigrate, I would be surprised if you get much action from that, particularly if you clean off the excess residue from the post (of course, then you have toxic waste on whatever you used to clean if off with...). The copper wouldn't interact with copper or brass, but would with steel if you were to use that as a cap, but then, the cap would probably rust away before it got consumed by electrolysis...

We use PVC coated aluminum as capping. I guess it could react to the copper in PT. I still have never heard about a problem. I'm curious if anyone of you guys have had problems. Thanks.
