It’s time to broaden my horizons. I’m remodeling my bathroom and I must move the crapper. I’m running 3″ PVC. I’ve noticed that it’s common out here to use a 4″ closet flange connected to an elbow that tapers from 4″ to 3″. Is this neccessary? Can’t a 3″ flange and elbow suffice? Am I missing some sort of weird fluid dymanics here? And while I’m at it, what about the flange? Flush with the finish floor or setting upon it?

I am one too! So unless it is some weird local code there is no reason a 3 inch would not work the outlet at the stool bottom is only 2" diameter. What you might be looking at sounds like a street ell which is slip joint one side and pipe diameter the other. The flange may be 4" out side 3" inside diameter so it could fit into a 4" coupling or a 3" pipe fits inside it.
