I’m thinking of doing a laid carpet inset within a border of wood floor in a master bedroom. Trying to make the transition from hallway to bedroom less abrupt, maybe even a little more elegant. Also thinking about the same type of set up transitioning from a kitchen (tile or stone) to an adjacent office.
Any try this before? Any advise about how to accomplish this, or even opinions about the look?
Thanks.

Sounds like a great idea. I would do the wood border either all parallell to all walls, or all perpendicular. I think the first style is called log cabin.

I was sort of thinking the same thing, with the lengths parallel to the walls and interleaved "miter" at the corners, but perhaps the direction of the flooring in the hallway will determine which is best so that it moves from one space directly into the next.
A version of that was not uncommon here in the parlour. They did the perimeter with about ten courses withthe corners log cabin style ( do a search here - about a month ago another Q came up about lob cabin and I posted a drawing of the corner style.Anyway, they would use nice wood for the perimeter and then a heap wood like pine or spruce for the center and tack down a rug over it.

I've seen it doen the way Piffin described, using just some filler flooring under where the carpet is going.
I've also seen it as an actual inlay. A border of about ten rows of wood and then carpet inlayed so that it's just about flush with the wood.
It looks nice.
BUT........ if it's a high traffic area and not a high quality carpet. It will eventually pack down and the transition will becoma uncomfortable and junk will collect there.
Might be awsome in some houses but in mine.....with three kids..........two good size dogs..........two cats and one redneck husband/father................it's a big no go.
But I have seen it and do like the look.
