So, this other cabinetmaker I know finds himself frequently in the position of qualified clients (referrals and upper crusty types) getting to the closing stage of the deal, with a lot of time invested on his part, and then they say “Of course, this will be cash.” Meaning of course, no 15% sales tax for them, which is of course illegal. Bear in mind this other cabinetmaker is still getting established, in a very closed community with a very tough economy (something around 40% unemployment, with a HUGE underground cash economy, so all the folks with money, who are very much a ruling class, are very used to getting their way in anything construction related, cause there are all kinds of moonlighting union guys, laid off guys from this plant or that, etc etc). At the very least it’s awkward for this guy, who is trying to do the right thing, and feels they shouldn’t be asking (especially because most of the ones doing the asking are medical folk and the like, and get their healthy paycheques from tax dollars, or take a lot out of the tax base in other ways). It’s never the working stiff that asks. Apparently. Anyway, this guy is trying to run a professional show, like I said, but in an economy where there aren’t a dozen clients lined up behind the hero demanding the break, and sometimes you’re looking at a project falling through and knocking a big hole in your schedule.
This never happens to me. But I said I would post this for this other guy. Do you guys, especially the smaller operations, get a lot of this?
