Hey guys, my better half is all over me to pick up a cast iron railing for our front steps (two steps and a landing). She seems to think they grow on trees.
Any ideas where I could get such a thing without breaking the bank?

Yup, believe it or not.
We have a wrought iron railing.
She wants cast iron. (Philadelphia used to be a hub of artistic cast iron so she sees it all over and says "I want one like that").
Where the heck am I supposed to find somebody who would make it today?
-- and I can't wait to find out what it will probly cost. ;-)

Bolts don't stop 'em. ;-(
Depends on the neighborhood. One rehab I did long ago, one night somebody tied a chain to one of the basement cast iron window grates, hooked to a vehicle and drove off. Luckily the hinges on it were brittle enough that their escapades didn't hurt the building much. I took off the other one ('cause I didn't see how I'd ever match it) and sold it. Anyway, can't imagine whoever stole the first one got much for it. Must have looked like crap by the time they got it where they were going. ;-)
Now there is a nice railing a few blocks up, and maybe if I was very very quiet . . . . ;-)

Should be able to find one of those recycle places that have one or two around.
On one of the latest episodes of TOH Steve was at a place that had plenty of them, I think he was in DC though but if your in Philly you should be able to find one someplace, or do as sphere said!
Doug
I still need to check the local recycle yards, but it's tough to find such a small piece tht would fit.
A huge long rail is actually easier.
Anyway, thanks!

Try http://www.kingmetals.com/
Tiawian cast iron junk, that looks good until a hammer hits it.
They also have cheap steel and aluminum repoductions.
Most wrought iron is bent steel.
Bingo!
Less spendy than I had thought.
Short drive to Baltimore too.
At least now I have something to try (instead of no clue where to look).
Thanks!
(I'll keep my hammers away from it)

They also ship via ups.King Baltimore really has the nicest counter staff of any steel supplier I have ever used. Call and get the catalog, lots of good flippin thru ideas. Wifey will have you whippin' out some iron pergolas in no timeThe hand held quality of their cast is a little rougher than the older US stuff (actually, much of New Orleans wrought and cast was fabricated in baltimore)
