Anyone have any good tips for framing a cathedral ceiling (roof).
The builing is 20ft X 18ft. The ridge will span 20ft. and half of the second floor is a loft the other is open to below. It is a 1 story log house so all the ext walls are capable of carrying a load, and there is a load bearing int wall under the loft ,that will be directly under half of the ridge beam. The plans actually show a 2×12 with a 2×4 underneath as a ridge board(non structural) using 2×10 rafters 24 oc. It shows no posts or ridge supports other than collar ties every 4′. Is this because of the log walls? Are the floor joists for the loft sufficient to prevent outward thrust of the walls? Any tips would be appreciated.

I'm assuming the ridge will be 10' long from your description, (if half of the space will be used as a loft). It might be helpful to attach a sketch of the proposed addition. What is the floor framing in the loft? 2"X8"'s/2"X10"'s, or something else? What is the pitch of the roof?
*Wood Doctor,I wouldn't want to rely on the floor joist to keep the roof from spreading....... especially since the front half of the loft is open. I'd recommend a structural ridge or having some of the timbers from the loft span to the other side of the house to tie in with the rafters.
*The floor for the loft is 2X10 16oc, and the roof is 12/12..The loft is built so it runs perpendicular to the ridge. The ridge is 20'. There are 2X6 collar ties every other rafter, 48" to the bottom of the collar tie
*Frame away per plan. What you're describing sounds quite substantial. The collar ties are important. There is a guidline concerning length in fhb. (recent- since first of year)
