Need some help re Sauna linings. Have been asked to Quote on the repair to a large sauna in a health club. The lining is all T&G western red cedar and they want it replaced with the same. I was asked if their was any type of sealer that can be applied to the cedar. I am not aware of ever seeing or reading about sealers for saunas but thought I would ask. The existing lining is about 12 yrs old and it is flaking. Would regular galvanized 16 guage nails be ok. It all will be blind nailed.
Thanks in Advance

I too am investigating 1X4 T&G Western Red Cedar sauna interior.
Due to the high temps, just about anything you apply to the surface of the finished wood will outgas...and in that enclosed space, this would likely not be good.
I use SS finish...again, due to the high temp/high humidity.

I have built a few saunas and have never sealed the cedar.
A few of notes.
Never use any wood with knots as the knots hold the heat at a differnet rate then clear cedar and can be uncomfortable to the user if they come in contact.
For any seating the structure under the seating can not be made with cedar as the cedar splits to easily so I do use standard spruce for the under supports.
When you remove the old cedar You may have to replace the foil reflecting paper.

Find some Finns and ask them, they are all experts. There is one one my hockey team , I'll ask him.

What'd he say?
He missed a couple of games because his brother in law tragically died at 30 in a snowmobile accident. I'll ask him tomorrow night.
