What is the best preserving product to use to dip grade A cedar shingles (exterior siding) for preservation and longevity. There’s a lot of brands out there so which one should I go with. I have 50 squares to do.
Also, re air circulation behind the shingles and over the tyvar. Any suggestions on what to do? The architect and builder were going to mount the shingles right onto the tyvar–but I’m going to live in this house and I want it to last. I need ideas for the builders that aren’t too expensive. I’m building down east on the coast.
thanks

Diane, if you like grey... there's a product that's a light stain and bleaching agent all in one... Cabot's makes it. You use the term tyvar... is the product actually "Typar"? I'd rather see a good felt paper instead. (Tar Paper). Important: the Cedar should be fastened with Stainless Steel Ring-Shank nails. Cedar shingles are fastened directly onto the sheathing when used as siding, it's only when used as roofing that "Skip-Sheathing" is needed.

Diane, What kind of look are you after ...... for a weathered grey look, Cabot's Bleaching oil will work fine. Dipping the shingles is the way to go. To make it easier, we used an old wringer washer with roller covers installed on the wringer rollers. Put the stain in the tub and dip the shingle and then run the shingle through the wringer to remove the excess. There are prestained shingles but they are costly. I'm assuming you are are using white cedar. Ditto the pevious advice about stainless fasteners and sidewall mounting.
