I have a 10 year old timber frame home with stained T111 plywood siding w/grooves on 8″ centers. I would like to install cedar shingles over the original siding. The windows and corners are framed in rough sawn cedar 1X4, so the smooth sawed shingles can run up to all opwnings and but against the existing trim (perhaps w/ a 1/8 inch gap to allow moisture to drain and dry).
Do I have to install a layer of tar or felt paper over the T111? Should I stain the shingles before installing them. Most projects I see in my part of Southern Michigan seem to install the shingles, then stain them.

What kind of barrier (felt, tyvek, etc.) is under the t1-11?

Work hard, play hard, sleep hard, wear glasses if you need 'em.
Dave: I live in northern Michigan, Harbor Springs, and sometimes work in the Birmingham area. As for installing the shingles. I would not use Tyvex because there has been some discussions on the tannin in the cedar which reacts with the house wrap. I would recommend 15# felt. I work on some homes up here that are over 100 years old, with cedar shingles, where felt was used and are still in good condition. Also I would recommend using a #6 galvanized (siding) nail. Maze Nails make a good nail, these can be purchased at any Home Depot. If you need any more assistant reply and I'll correspond with you. As for staining I sometimes dip then in stain so that they are coated on all sides. This is a lot of work but it is easier than trying to stain the edges. For help on installation the Cedar Shingle Bureau has a great website with printable installation guides. Good Luck. Dale Buchanan
